International Standard Serial Number (ISSN)

ISSN is a worldwide identification code used by publishers, suppliers, libraries, information services, bar coding systems, union catalogues, etc. for citation and retrieval of serials such as Journals, Newspapers, Newsletters, Directories, Yearbooks, Annual Reports, Monograph series, etc. The benefits of having ISSN include international publicity and recognition of serials by automatic inclusion in the International Serials Directory Database.

ISSN National Centre of India

The Indian ISSN Centre at the National Science Library, NIScPR (erstwhile NISCAIR), New Delhi is one of a network of over 89 national centres worldwide. It is responsible for assigning ISSNs to serials published in India. The Centre is also responsible for contributing Indian records to the world database of ISSN numbers, known as the ISSN Register, maintained by the ISSN International Centre in Paris. Since 1986, National Institute of Science Communication and Policy Research (erstwhile NISCAIR/INSDOC) has been designated as the National Centre for assigning ISSNs to serial publications published in India. The ISSN assigned periodicals are registered in the international database in Paris.

• It has been noticed that some publishers state on their websites that their journals have been "approved" by National Science Library/NIScPR. Assigning ISSN does not amount to approving a journal or its contents by NSL/NIScPR.

• ISSN is assigned free of cost by National Science Library.

• Applications for obtaining ISSN have to be filled online as per the guidelines of the ISSN National Centre, India.
